Promoters of the Formula One Grand Prix™ street circuit at the Green Point Sport Tourism Precinct in Cape Town, South Africa

The event is strategically designed to benefit government, local businesses, and communities by driving tourism growth, creating business opportunities, and revitalising the motorsport sector, all while generating significant media impact. It also serves as a platform for skills transfer and development programmes.
Launched publicly in January 2011, our bid for a street race is the longest-standing bid, thanks to its economic viability and unrivalled location.

1999
Igshaan Amlay, the CEO of Cape Town Grand Prix SA, stands on the shore of Robben Island overlooking Table Bay Harbour when he conceives the idea of a Cape Town Formula 1 Grand Prix. Igshaan started working on the bid and designed the track while living and working on Robben Island. Initially traded under Jonga Ikapa Marketing cc, CK Reg. No. 2002/008/286/23.
2005
- Igshaan started to establish a team from 2005 onward.
- 21 July: Office of the Premier Ebrahim Rasool acknowledged receipt of Igshaan’s proposal re “Hosting economically viable F1 Grand Prix in Cape Town” with ref: PM2005/2392.
2006
- 2 Aug: Meeting with Stewart Scott International to discuss scope of work towards obtaining a cost estimate for the development of the street race track.
- 16 Aug: Received cost estimate from Stewart Scott International for new road construction, construction of new exit and entrance lanes to the pits, upgrading of parking areas, and development of pits area.
2007
The Bid company was registered. Cape Town Grand Prix SA (pty) Ltd Reg. No.2007/011456/07.
2008
18 Nov: Presentation to Wesgro CEO Angelo Manzoni who expressed his interest in the proposal to attract F1™ to Cape Town.
2009
In-principle support from Motorsport South Africa (MSA).
2010
Meeting with SAIL/Stade France Cape Town Stadium operator. Contact: Bredette Koen. Note: In a post-2010 strategy developed for SAIL Stade France, the study identified Formula 1™ as a potential event (KSA, 2009).
2011
- 24 Jan: Media launch of our intentions to host F1™ on a street race in Cape Town including the unveiling of our proposed track.
- Positive meeting with F1 Circuit Designers & Consultant, Herman Tilke.
2012 - 2015
- Bernie Ecclestone reinforces his interest in bringing F1™ to Cape Town.
- Positive local and international media coverage (1 billion potential viewers).
2015
- 21 Aug: Bernie Ecclestone announces he wants a F1 street race in Cape Town
- In principal endorsement from V&A Waterfront Management and Growthpoint.
- Appointment of Grant Thornton as the official Auditors of CTGPSA.
2017
CTGPSA received an official letter of support from the Western Cape Government’s director of sport promotion, Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport to host the Formula One Grand Prix™ series on a street circuit in Cape Town.
2018
Official letter of endorsement from the Western Cape Government’s Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport to host Formula E Grand Prix™ on a street circuit in Cape Town.
