Our Story, Our Legacy

In 1999, Igshaan Amlay, a former political prisoner, passionate entrepreneur, and dedicated social activist, conceived the groundbreaking idea of bringing Formula 1™ to Robben Island – the sacred ground where our beloved father of the nation, Nelson Mandela, was once imprisoned. At the time, Igshaan was living and working on Robben Island, contributing to the island’s transformation into a national museum, monument, and eventually a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

But this dream is so much more than an event. Bringing F1™ to a Cape Town street circuit isn’t just about hosting a world-class race; it’s about creating a lasting legacy – one that connects us all as a nation, and as a continent. This vision is rooted in the heart of South Africa, and in the spirit of Africa’s boundless potential.

At its core, it’s about people – our people. The very skills that drive every element of Formula 1™ – from engineering, mechanics, and strategy to public relations, communications, and physical training – will be passed on, cultivated, and nurtured by our local communities. These are the skills that will empower the next generation of South African and African leaders, creating an enduring legacy that stretches far beyond the racetrack.

Our project, the South African Automotive School of Excellence, embodies this vision. Through it, we ensure that the F1™ legacy will be felt for generations to come, as we continue to shape a future where Africa takes its rightful place on the global stage.

As Nelson Mandela so profoundly said, “It’s only impossible until it’s done.” We carry this truth forward, knowing that together, we can turn the impossible into a reality for our people and our continent.
